If you own a solar powered umbrella sold exclusively by Costco, there's a chance it could burst into flames. The 10-foot light-up patio umbrella from SunVilla has been recalled following reports that it spontaneously combusts. While your umbrella catching fire would certainly be a talking point at your backyard summer barbecue, safety is of course a huge concern.
The recall was filed by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission そしてその Government of Canada last week, with the Consumer Product Safety Commission reporting that the lithium-ion batteries inside the umbrella's solar panel unit can overheat and cause combustion. LED lights attached to the umbrella's arms are powered by the solar panels and batteries.

According to the recall notice, six cases of umbrellas overheating were reported, with three of the umbrellas actually catching on fire.
"Consumers should immediately stop using the umbrellas, remove the solar panel puck containing a lithium-ion battery from the top of the umbrella, store the puck out of the sun and away from combustible material, and do not charge the puck with the AC adapter," the commission said in the recall 知らせ。
The umbrella was sold on Costco's website and in its stores between December 2020 and May 2022. The price of the umbrella was somewhere between $130 and $160, and consumers are able to get a full refund. Around 400,000 umbrellas have been recalled in the U.S. and 33,000 in Canada.
